Why is it so expensive to become a pilot ?

The equation is easy to understand and difficult to solve : a pilot school has to pay its teachers, the rent of the classroom, buy airplanes, pay the mechanics for the daily maintenance of the aircraft, pay the fuel, etc. All this is extremely expensive and there are no subsidies for flight school in Europe anymore. Only France still has a public pilot school but it takes only a few candidates per year.
